Landscape orientation of the front porch of Ellenborough. At the center of the foreground is a path leading to the center of the porch of a white clapboard house. It appears to be a generous step up to the porch deck and there are no steps in place. A black and white cat sits on the path. On each side of the path is a large tree of ancient vintage. On the left of the picture, a young woman in a dark dress is seated on something--a rock? a bench? in front of the tree. On the right side of the walk, another young woman in a dark dress with leg-o-mutton sleeves is standing next to the tree and a small table. There are 4 visible pillars at the front of the porch and there are probably 6 altogether. The pillars on each side of the path are connected by a piece of wood that is installed about 3/4 of the way up the pillars. The reason for this is not clear. A low door is at the left end of the porch. There are 3, possibly 4 chairs visible on the porch; one is a rocker. An elderly gentleman in dark clothes, dark shoes, and light socks is sitting in the rocker reading a newspaper. On his right, a young woman in a dark dress is seated on another chair. Behind them, a door with a transom light opens into the house and a door on the opposite side is also open so one can see all the way through the house. There is a small dark rectangle in the clapboards on the right side of the door. 4 windows with 6 lights above and 6 lights below and dark shutters are visible on the front of the house. 4 similar windows are visible in the second story. Tree branches obscure most of the second story. A note on the back of the original frame, "Ellenborough, St. Mary's Co., Md. house of Benj. [amin] Gwinn Harris. To be given to St. Mary's Historical Leora M. Cole." Mr. Fenwick's additional note: "Hon. Benjamin Gwinn Harris and his grandaughters, the Misses Maddox, daughters of Fred Maddox.
