Description

This unfinished English paper pieced quilt top was found in the Coad House in Charlotte Hall, MD, after the deaths of Professor J. Francis and Mary C.S. Coad, who lived there. Professor Coad was long a member of the faculty of Charlotte Hall School. Their granddaughter, Mrs. Frederick D. Dallam, was the owner of the quilt until November 2004 when she gave it to Mrs. Charles D. Boone of Bryantown, MD, who is a quilter. Mrs. Boone returned it to Mrs. Dallam who gave it to the Society in 2006. The name of the pattern, according to Mrs. Boone, is "Grandmother's Flower Garden." Mrs. Dallam has no idea who started the quilt because the women in her family were not quilters. Very precise hexagons were cut from heavy paper, equally precise, slightly larger hexagons were cut from fabric, and the fabric was folded around and basted onto the paper pieces. These fabric hexagons were stitched together into "flowers" which were then stitched together to form the quilt top. There is a center flower, ringed by yellow flowers, ringed by red plaid flowers, ringed by pink flowers, ringed by miscellaneous light-colored flowers. Eventually the heavy paper would have been removed. For this quilt, the heavy paper was provided by pages of a St. Mary's County court record of some kind. There are several county names visible on some of the cut hexagons. Those with names are in alphabetical order in their container. The pre-cut fabric hexagons are grouped by pattern; each pattern is in its cubicle in the box. The scraps are organized by basic color and each color group is in a paper L-sleeve. The completed portion of the quilt top is wrapped in muslin and rolled loosely. There are charts to tell whether a particular fabric appears in the quilt, the loose flowers, or the hexagons. There is also a chart to help one find the names visible on the verso of the completed portion of the quilt.
