Epaulet, likely from the Civil WarEntry/Object ID
2015.010.0001Description
1 epaulet found in Taylor Cove when it was washed up after Hurricane Agnes in 1972.
The piece is 7" long, strap 2 3/4"w, 5 1/8" at widest part, wire fringe 2 1/2" with ca. 76 curled wire fringes hanging from the outside edge. The fringe has vestiges of a gold or bronze color. On the top of the widest edge of the piece there is a brass metal curved and domed piece with tightly coiled wire trim around its edges. It looks much like a piece of bronze age jewelry.
The only distinguishing mark is the bronze colored shoulder button. It shows the eagle shield with an olive branch in one claw and arrows in the other and an A in the middle of the shield. There is no striping on the shield. If it were Navy insignia, I think it would have had an anchor on it somewhere.
The underside is covered with fabric of an indeterminate color, possibly brown. Threads used to fasten the piece to the coat are still present. There are folds of material on the outside edge that would have served to protect the coat from being abraded by the wire fringe.
This piece is likely of Civil War vintage from the Union forces.
Taylor Cove is on the east side of St. George Creek, directly opposite the St. George's Island Bridge.Collection
