Description: At some point in the early 1930s, the corporate name of the company changed from Eastern Shore Trust Company to County Trust Company of Maryland. This necessitated an exchange of shares, a tedious exercise. The process had to be explained during a period of great suspicion of banks. An impressive number of people owned shares. The cost of a share appeared to be $10, so if someone owned 37/100 of a share already, he could get a full share for $6.30. Most people did choose to buy a full share. Shares purchased long ago often had to be issued in different names. The certificates were numbered, so there were possibilities of transcription errors. Some families had lost their certificates, so there was lots of paperwork to prove ownership. There was tax to be paid, so checks for small amounts had to be sent along. All this was done on paper and by mail, so it took a long time. These sheets are carbons of the paperwork sent by the Leonardtown branch with shares that went to Cambridge for reissue.
