Fannie Mattingly Chaptico Store & Farm Ledger - 1850's

Name/Title

Fannie Mattingly Chaptico Store & Farm Ledger - 1850's

Entry/Object ID

1977.002.0001

Scope and Content

17"h x 10 1/2"w x 2 1/4 thick leather ledger with index tabs in front and appropriately ruled pages. Fannie Mattingly ran a store in Chaptico in the 1850s and kept her accounts in the book. Her handwriting is quite good and her pages were numbered. However, the back 2/3 of the pages of the book were more like a farm ledger--workers being paid, farm expenses by year, etc. These entries were mostly in pencil and the penmanship was poor. There were many blank pages at the back of the book. This book was found with three others in a box in the front basement in 2019; The 1977 year is entirely arbitrary, since I have no idea when these ledgers arrived.
