2022.003.0001Description
1 map on board ; 12 3/8"h x 14 1/2"w
This purports to be a plate from the Maryland Geological Survey, Volume II, Plate XLV.
The title below the map is "Farrer's Map, 1651 (Reduced)" from Winsor's Narrative and critical history. The sheet is 9 3/4" x 11 7/8"w with the black and cream map 6 1/4"h x 8"w, being centered on the sheet. At the top of the map is a small oval with a head of Sir Francis Drake below which is tiny text that says he landed at 37 degrees in 1577 and claimed New Albion in the name of Queen Elizabeth. Many rivers have names that have remained, Potomac, Delaware, etc., but their locations are not accurate. In the upper left corner of the map it says, in quite large letters, "The Sea of China and the Indies" which is several thousand miles away. On the left edge it says "Nuoa Francia," which I suppose is Canada. Maryland is placed near the appropriate rivers: "Lord Baltimore's plantation begin in 1635."Collection
