Father Fenwick's female congregation-1Entry/Object ID
1995.001.2564Description
8"h x 10"w black and white photo of Father Edward Dominick Fenwick, nee Norbert Fenwick, and his female congregation at an unnamed church in or near Hampton, Virginia. He was standing behind the altar rail with his back to the camera and the women and girls were seated in the pews. Some women paid attention to the priest and some eyed the camera. This was back in the day when women still wore hats or other head covering and actually dressed up to go to church. It must have been a warm day because the windows were open.
The church had a checkerboard tile floor. The pews and altar rail were dark wood. The windows along the side were double pointed arch lights in a single deep pointed arch opening. The bottom third of each leaded glass window was able to rotate open. The stations of the cross were on the walls between the window openings, each lit by a small light fixture. There appeared to be a dark wooden choir loft in the back. A large fan was hanging from the loft.
The priest had on a white vestment covered with a long black cape with a hood.
