First automobile in St. Mary's County 2Entry/Object ID
2014.009.0266Description
8"h x 11 1/2"w black and white photocopy on foam core board of the first automobile in St. Mary's County. It was a 1908 Model S Ford driven by Leonard Locke Holmes. He was nattily dressed in white trousers, a dark jacket, and a patterned tie. I hope he had a duster to cover his nice clothes as he drove on the county's poor roads. The car had a high backed seat in the front and a lower backed seat in the back. It did not have a cover at all. The steering wheel came up to the driver at a sharp angle. The tires were thin. Dr. Guyther used this image in an early presentation on the northern part of the county.
