Description

Black and white 10"h x 8"w photo of the Freedom of Conscience statue commissioned for the Maryland Tercentenary and installed in the triangle of ground between MD Route 5 and MD Route 489 in St. Mary's City. A male figure has partially emerged from a large rough block of granite. His head is free of the block and looks skyward, but his body, including arms and legs, is in high relief in the block. A torch is in relief in the lower left corner of the block. Under the figure is carved "Freedom of Conscience" and on the support block is carved "Erected by the counties of Maryland." In this photo, the fencing for a tennis court is just visible behind the statue.
