1995.001.1931Description
3 1/8"h x 3 1/8"w black and white photo of the gable end of Friendly Hall in Helen, Md. The house was built in the mid nineteenth century, possibly by George Sylvester Mattingly. It was two and a half stories with a gable roof. There was a pair of separated chimneys on the gable end. There were fireplaces on the second floor, so the chimney stack did not begin until high up in the brick work. The ground wire for the lightning conductor is very visible on the left chimney. At the time the photo was taken, all but two windows had their shutters closed. The window in the roof peak between the chimneys had its shutter open, as did the left of the two windows on the second floor. There were also two windows between the chimneys on the first floor. The full-length two story porch was visible on the right. It had a closed panel railing on the second floor of the gable end and a starburst railing on the first floor. The house appeared to be in good repair.
