3 1/8"h x 3 1/8"w black and white photo of Friendly Hall in Helen, Md. The house was built in the mid nineteenth century, possibly by George Sylvester Mattingly. It was two and a half stories with a gable roof that incorporated the roof of a five bay porch with two stories. That roof and the second floor of the porch were supported by square pillars. The railing around each floor was a starburst pattern. There was a pair of separated chimneys on each gable end. There were fireplaces on the second floor, so the chimney stack did not begin until high up in the brick work. At the time the photo was taken, all the windows had their shutters closed. There appeared to be a central door with sidelights on the second floor and a pair of windows on each side of that door. On the first floor, there was a center entry door with a transom window. There was a pair of windows on each side of that door as well. The porch floor was four steps from the ground.
