3 1/8"h x 3 1/8"w black and white photo of Friendly Hall in Helen, Md. The house was built in the mid nineteenth century, possibly by George Sylvester Mattingly. It was two and a half stories with a gable roof. There was a pair of separated chimneys on each gable end. There were fireplaces on the second floor, so the chimney stack did not begin until high up in the brick work. At the time the photo was taken, all the windows had their shutters closed. There was a central door on the second floor and a pair of windows on each side of that door. The door opened onto the roof of the porch below. There was a handrailing, but no roof for the small space. On the first floor, there was a center entry door with a transom window. There was a pair of windows on each side of that door as well. The porch covered the entry door, but all the windows were out in the open. A pair of square posts on each side of the entry supported the flat porch roof. There was a simple handrailing for the space. The porch floor was two steps from the ground and supported on corner blocks. Skunks would have had no problem living under the porch.
