Description

Black and white 8"h x 10"w photo of Friendly Hall in Helen, Md. The view is of the gable end and porches on one side. The two and a half story clapboard house boast massive double chimneys and a full length porch on each story. The roof line incorporates the porches. The dark painted outside end chimneys have a corbel on each top. The shoulders of each chimney flair out just above the second story windows and carry a straight line to the base. There is a narrow four over four window with one shutter in the roof peak, two narrow four over four windows with two shutters each between the chimneys on the second floor and two similar windows between the chimneys on the first floor. The windows on the first floor have the shutters closed. The porches are on the right side of the house. There are six plain square posts supporting the roof. The railing on the gable end of the upper porch is solid with something of a board and batten effect. The remainder of the second floor railing is a repeated asterisk or star effect. Two floor to ceiling windows are visible with their shutters closed. On the first floor, all the railings use the asterisk or star motif. Two narrow windows with closed shutters are visible at the near end and one is visible at the far end. There may be a center door that is obscured by a post. The porch deck is four steps from the ground; the opening is in the center of the space. A bench is on the porch near the camera and there may be a settee on the opposite side of the porch. There is a gutter along the entire eave of the porch and a downspout is on each corner of the porch. The porch railing is in need of paint. There is probably a single story wing on the far side of the house and a dark outbuilding is barely visible beyond that. There are a few plants growing around the foundation, but no bushes or vines. Because all the shutters are closed, the house may be unoccupied. ********************************** Text on verso: printed in black ink "Friendly Hall at Helen Saint Mary's County, Maryland" and "Photo by Chas.
