Description

8"h x 10"w black and white landscape oriented photo of the front of the Old Jail. The photo was taken in the early spring by Marion Warren. The building was a rectangle; stone on the first floor, brick on the second and had a hipped roof with a small overhang. The roof material was cedar shakes and many were missing. There were small inside end chimneys on each narrow elevation of the building. The chimney on the right had a lightning rod. Power came across the street to a connection on the top left side of the building just under the eaves. The electric meter was below that on street level. There were three windows on the second floor, two on the first floor, and a center door. All the shutters were closed. The door had a very small barred window and a very narrow transom window. There were fluted wood pilasters on each side of the door and a low wood round arch over the entry. A very large metal tower was behind the building. In the distance on the right was a two story brick building and a street light. The sidewalk ran right next to the building on the left and a short extension crossed in front of the Jail to its front door. A low brick wall was barely visible in the left foreground of the photo; it separated the street from the courthouse lawn. A thigh-high hedge divided the Old Jail from the courthouse lawn and a cherry tree was near that hedge.
