Description

Scan of a Garner store ledger. There are two copies of the CD. The original book was as follows: 1907-1926 13"t x 8"w x 1 1/4"d Buckram bound ledger, brown with deep red leather corners and a band on the spine with text "Ledger." There are the usual printed motifs on covers and handwritten in the interior rectangle "Jno. R. Garner." Inside there are 8 loose sheets that were fastened with a circular metal paper clip. These sheets are by year and have boxes for months. There are abbreviations for various companies and money amounts, but I cannot match the amounts with those companies' records in the book. Next are 13 pages with alphabet tabs listing the names of wholesalers and the page number showing transactions with the companies. Pages 1-75 show wholesalers' accounts, pages 76-249 are blank, pages 250-251 have records of Baltimore Fertilizer Co., pages 252-264 are blank and pages 265-294 are a record of cash sales for August 1921 to June 1926. On page 295 is a statement about the partnership of John A. and William R. Garner. Pages 295-370 records cash sales for 1908-August 1921. Note that the oldest date is at the back of the book; in this section, Mr. Garner worked toward the front of the book, so he began with 1908 on p. 370 and ended with June 1926 on p. 265. Each cash sale page has its upper outside corner broken away, presumably to help Garner find the most current page quickly. Some of the page numbers are compromised as a result.
