Description

George B. Dent's Survey Book A for 1869-1872 as scanned by Maryland State Archives. This notebook is difficult. The chronology of entries is erratic and earlier surveys done by others are often copied into this book. There is a major filming error early in the process. The pages of the notebook are numbered, but the numbers are not always visible. The handwriting is challenging. Legible personal and property names are included in this record. The introductory page references a crude index in the front of each book, but there is not one for this book. There are 38 numbered scans and an unnumbered scan of the introductory page from the Maryland Archives. The entire file may be found on the Society's web site in the ?? file. I did the best I could with place and personal names, but if I was not sure, I tried not to guess. To view the scanned copy, go to the Society's website, www.stmaryshistory.org, click on Research, then Land and Tax Records, and scroll down to Surveyor's Journals. January 8, 1954 The notebooks were originally microfilmed at the Archives with the permission of Mary Dent Slye, a granddaughter. This copy is a scan of the microfilm images. Scan 001 This shows cover p. 2 and the first page of the notebook. There is lots of figuring on the cover, although Thomas Hebb is listed at p. 54, Frank Goddard? at p. 97, Loker and Redman and ? on p. 56, and ? Dyer at p. 53. The facing page has a small double circle around %28, and Book A in large letters as a title. Two notes by the title reference a schoolhouse in St. Inigoes and a property called Mount Olive. The first half of the page was a survey done on September 17, 1869 of St. Hollins? that was in Ben Tippett's book. All the lines were crossed out with vertical pencil marks. The second half of the page was a survey of ?? to be sold? transferred from Athanasius Ford to John A. Thomas. The referenced deed was from 1785. Much of the text has been lost to dampness. Scan 002 The page numbers are not visible. The courses for several tracts that made up Hanover are on both pages. At the bottom of the second page is the beginning of a survey of Hanover's? to change hands from John Greenwell to Athanasius Ford. Scan 003 Page numbers 6 & 7 are visible. Completion of Scan 002's text is on the top third of p. 6, followed by a transfer from Richard Clark to Athanasius Ford of part of a tract called Hanover. The next survey is for a transfer from the State of Maryland to Athanasius Ford of property called Addition to Hanover. The next property is also called Hanover; the description is completed on Scan 004. Scan 004 Page numbers 8 & 9 are visible. After the few lines from Scan 003 are entered on p. 8, there is a description of land bought from George Plater and illegible others by John T______ in 1869. This entry was crossed out with vertical lines. On page 9 was a small entry dividing the lands of Mrs. Hezekiah Dent, George Thomas (Black), Capt. Lawrence, and John B. Abell, but the entry was not finished and crossed out with vertical lines. The next third of the page was blank with the bottom of the page listing incomplete courses of something. At the very bottom is a note about where to look for earlier parts of the description. Missing pages 10-15 Scan 005 Page numbers 16 & 17. The top third of the page has courses for an unknown property. The next third is a survey of Hopewell's Adventure aka John B. Jarboe's land, survey of Winiford [later known as Winifred], also John B. Jarboe's land, and on p. 17, survey of The Slope, also John B. Jarboe's land, although the total acreage was not noted. The rest of the page was cut away. Scan 006 This is where the scanning or filming error was made. Pages 18 & 19 are visible at the top, but other pages have been flopped down over the primary pages. The overlay page on the left is not sufficiently visible to tell what it is, but the page on the right was George Dent's family's births and deaths. Unfortunately, the bottom part was out of the frame. What is visible shows a sad pattern of births and deaths of children. Scan 007 Pages 18 & 19, both of which were cut off at the bottom. P. 18 has a survey by Benjamin Tippett for a school lot and possibly a correction for the same. P. 19 tried to establish the line between Oak Farm and Mount Olive. The text does not appear to be complete on the page. The lower right corner was obliterated by damp, I think. Scan 008 Pages 20 & 21 Page 20 is partial. This is a copy of an 1822 survey of a tract of land to transferred from George Plater to Philip Greenwell called Resurrection Manor. Page 21 is an ownership history of part of Resurrection Manor. Scan 009 Pages 22 & [23]. The top of p. 22 completes the Resurrection Manor discussion, followed by a survey done in 1870 of oyster coves for Thomas F. Joy and S. S. Jones, delineating the areas allotted to each man. There is a drawing on p. [23]. Scan 010 Pages [2]4 & [25]. These pages lay out the oyster grounds of Robert H. Wise, William H. B. Wise, and Clement B. Milburn. The drawing takes up most of p. [25]. Scan 011 The page numbers are not legible. In the upper left is an oyster ground for George C. Abell. The resulting drawing looks like a kite on a string. On the opposite page William F. Freeman sold property called Freeman's ? or Bean's ? to William B. Bean and Joseph L. Bean. Scan 012 Pages 28 & [29] Page 28 is a very carefully drawn table at 90 degrees to the rest of the text. The table of parcels of Resurrection Manor was for Ignatius Dorsey. The first column had lines for 23 parcels, Bearings, ? Chains, North, South, East, West, Cor. N, Cor. E., Cor. North, Cor. South, Cor. East, Cor. West, ? Longitude, K. Acres, T. Acres. On the left edge was a drawing of a chestnut tree and some notes. I assume this is tied to a large drawing that is not here. Page 29 has notes about Winifred's and Abell's Chance. There is a small table at the bottom of the page and some sort of inset on the lower right corner. Scan 013 Pages 30 & 31. Page 30 has a drawing and chart for Hopewell's Adventure. Page 31 has an indenture made for Hopewell's Adventure in 1831. The description is not complete on this page. Scan 014 Pages 32 & 33. These pages continue the Hopewell's Adventure information. There is a table in the middle of p. 33 and that is the end of the text. Scan 015. Pages 34 & 35. A tract called New Design is on the left with a description of an indenture of 1821. Beaverdam Manor is described on the right. Scan 016 Pages 36 & 37. These pages are an excellent example of why one should always keep the paper original. I don't know if it was poor filming or the original failed, but these two pages are impossible to read. Even the district number is illegible, so there is no chance to puzzle out the tract name. Scan 017 Pages 38 & 39. These two pages are about Wolverhampton. The text is still difficult. Scan 018 Pages 40 & 41. These pages are about Beaverdam Manor. There is a chart on P. 40. Scan 019 is a repeat of pages 40 & 41. Scan 020 Pages 42 & 43 are more about the land records of Beaverdam Manor. Scan 021 Pages 44 & 45. These pages were scanned with a different software program and possibly different equipment; they are brighter and the method of moving around the scan is different. On p. 44 is another survey of Wolverhampton. On p. 45 is a survey of what is called Manning's Purchase as a title, but the top line looks like Hennings Teacher. Manning's Purchase is probably correct. Scan 022 Pages 46 & 47. The lower left corner of page 46 was damaged by dampness. On page 46 was a complicated drawing of several lots. On p. 47 there is a survey for an unnamed piece of property done in 1869 and then 2 surveys labeled Lot 4 of Daniel Statesman's land and Lot 4 of Peter Morgan's land. Scan 023 Pages 48 & 49. On p. 48, the St. Andrew's vestry asked for a survey of their property. The earlier survey was done in 1853; Dent checked it in 1906 and drew a severe square. On p. 49, Manning's Purchase and Goldsborough's ? were surveyed into one lot. Scan 024 Pages 50 & 51. All of p. 50 and half of p. 51 was devoted to a survey of Part of Addition, with a drawing of the result. It looked just like a butterfly. The rest of p. 51 was a survey, done in 1874, of Hopewell's Adventure and Addition. Scan 025 Pages 52 & 53. Page 52 was a survey of Saint Joseph's Church lot. P. 53 covered Thompson's Lot with Addition. The remainder of the page is for the partition of Ann Elizabeth Plater's land, carefully copied by John A. Camalier. Scan 026 Pages 54 and 55. Page 54 was devoted to an 1832 survey of an unnamed piece of property deeded to Thomas Hebb. On p. 55 was a copy of a letter from Benjamin Tippett to the trustee of T. W. Gough presenting Tippett's bill for surveying property owned by Loker, Hebb, Redman, and Dyer. No date visible. Scan 027 Pages 56 & 57. The survey mentioned on p. 55 was presented on p. 56. Sadly, the lower left corner of the page was damaged by damp. Dent signed the survey in 1870 on. p. 57. A considerable part of the page was torn away, but I think minimal to no text was lost. Scan 028 Pages 58 & 59. On p. 58 is a copy of an old survey of Culpepper and on p. 59 is a copy of an old survey of Resurrection Manor. The bottom of each page was torn away. Scan 029 Pages 60 & 61. Both pages have copies of old deeds/surveys for Hopewell's Adventure and Hopewell's Addition. The bottom of p. 60 was torn away. Scan 030 Pages 62 & 63. Page 62 has a copy of an old survey of New Design, complete with drawing. Page 63 has an old survey of Resurrection Manor. Both pages are intact. Scan 031 Pages 64 & 65. Both pages are correspondence from Benjamin Tippett to T. W. Gough's trustee about the Belvidere Woodland with notes by Dent. Scan 032 Pages 66 & 67. I think p. 66 is Mr. Reeder's tentative corrections to a survey. P. 67 is a discussion about property in an estate. Scan 033 Pages 68 & 69. At the top of p. 68 are four lines that are carefully crossed out. Dent started again a little farther down the page. A. A. Lawrence sold part of Wol??? to Henry Clarke in the State of New York. Dent surveyed the property in 1870. The lower left corner of the page has been damp. P. 69 is a copy of Henry Chunn's survey of the Belvedere Woodland. Scan 034 Pages [70 & 71]. On p. 70 is a survey done in 1871 of a piece of property on Cedar Point sold by George P. Leach to Thomas O. Spencer. There is a drawing of a 3 7/8 acre parallelogram. The top half of p. 71 is a big blot. Below that is a short survey of Part of Small Strife, if I am reading it correctly, but there is damage to part of the page on the right. Scan 035 Pages 72 [also handwritten at the top of the page] & 73. On p. 72 are six notes. Four of them are distances in miles from Leonardtown to various spots as measured by Dr. A. Jack Spalding's odometer; one is some sort of distance calculation and one is something about the death of a young man. The bottom left corner of the page is damaged. On p. 73 is a survey of oyster land submitted to the Justice of the Peace to record the same. Scan 036 Pages 74 & 75 dimly visible in the corners, but someone handwrote the numbers. These pages are once again done with the software of the early pages. On p. 74 is a plat with drawing of Part of Resurrection Manor purchased by Isaac Forest from Capt. Asa Lawrence. P. 75 is an oyster ground with drawing done in 1871 for Mrs. Marcia Homes which should probably be Holmes. Scan 037 Pages 76 & 77. Page 76 has a large drawing and table of George R. Gannon's? land. On p. 77 is the survey of John B. Abell's purchase of Part of Blackiston done in January 1870. At the bottom of the page is the beginning of John Parson's? purchase of the same named property. This page is badly faded on the right edge. Scan 038 Pages 78 & 79. The numbers are clearly visible, but someone hand wrote them anyway. The bulk of p. 78 is the continuation of the Part of Blackiston survey. This one was done in August of 1870. On the remainder of p. 78 and most of p. 79 are four surveys of oyster grounds, but no drawings. There are a couple of lines of a survey for Indian Bridge. This page is badly faded or has water damage on the right edge. Unnumbered scan is the label for Book A. "George B. Dent Surveyor's Book A 1869-1872"
