Description

Band uniform from George Washington Carver High School, probably used in the 1960s. The jacket is of cream colored wool twill, fully lined with cream colored nylon. It has a royal blue wool twill stand up collar outlined with cream cord. A heavy metal link and bar closure pulls the collar tight around the wearer's neck. A flap of blue cloth protects the throat from the metal. There are blue epaulets that are 2" wide at the shoulder seam and then taper to 1 1/2" wide near the neck; each is outlined with cream cord. There is a buttonhole in the narrow end and the epaulet is held down with a 9/16" diameter domed silver shank button with a raised lyre design. The jacket has set in sleeves of cream twill with a 5" royal blue cuff that peaks. The cuff is traced by royal blue cord and finished with a 4" "frog" design above the cuff peak. High on the left sleeve is a circular royal blue patch with a cream inner circle and an eagle in the center. The letters for "Carver High School" are around the eagle. The jacket has an offset front closure to provide a double breasted effect. The flap goes from left to right and tapers back to the center of the bottom edge. There are seven pairs of 1" diameter domed silver shank buttons with a lyre design on the front of the jacket. There is royal blue facing on the jacket flap. The black cloth maker's label is on the inside right: Bonnett's Chestertown, Md. in gold thread. There are white backing buttons for the shank buttons behind each row, but the ones on the left are under the lining. On the left side of the interior is a generous pocket with heavy duck lining. There is a large button on the left neck that is meant to hold the right side of the jacket in place. There is a hanging loop in the center of the inside collar. There are two mystery 1 1/2" openings on the side seams; one is open and one is stitched shut. This jacket is 26 1/2" at the center back from the collar seam to the hem. It has a 22 1/2" sleeve. It is a very well made garment. The trousers are royal blue wool twill, unlined, with a cream twill stripe down the outside seam, There are four canvas pockets. There are loops to accommodate a 1 1/2" to 2" belt. The trousers have a zipper fly with a hook and bar at the top. There are clever side adjusters that can tighten up 2 1/2" on each side. An additional 1 3/4" pleat had been home made at the back seam; the bunching of the material would have been covered by the jacket. The left back pocket closes with a button tab; the right pocket is open. The trousers are 32" long as presented, but they had been turned up 7" to accommodate the wearer, who must have been tiny.
