Description

Black and white 3 1/2"h x 3 1/2"w photo of Gravelly Hills or Hamberg near Chaptico. This large home in three sections is in a ruinous state. This view is from the smallest section toward the largest. The small section has a gable metal? roof with the porch roof included on the left. There is a boarded up opening in the eaves. On the first floor gable end, there is a single window centered on the peak. The electrical service comes to the house between that window and the porch. The porch is enclosed on this end, but screened on the other exposures. The porch is three steps above the ground. The center section is two stories tall with a gable roof and has a large chimney on its gable end. The corbel of the chimney is substantially compromised--the whole chimney is compromised. This section is set back from the roofline of the main house--its roof peak is about a quarter of the way down the back of the roof of the main house. This section has a substantial attic, but it is not as large as the one in the main house. There is a large opening to the left of the chimney, but I cannot tell if the shutters are closed over it or it is boarded up. There are no other openings in this gable end. On the second floor under the eaves, there are two windows which still have some glass. There is a large porch on the first floor with a shed roof and screens. The door to the porch is slightly left of center and it is three steps above the ground. The space under the porch may be walled off with sheet metal. There is a pair of chimneys between this section and the main house, but the left chimney has failed down to its shoulders. The right chimney appears to be in good repair. The main house has a gable roof with a very steep angle. There are no openings in the gable end except near the roof peak where the clapboards have failed. There are two windows close together on the near end of the second floor and another window near the opposite corner. Judging by the marks on the siding, these windows once had shutters. Glass is missing from some windows. There is a porch across the entire first floor with a shed roof. The porch is three bays wide and is not screened. It appears there are two windows on the near end and the door is at the far end of this elevation. The porch is four steps above the ground. There is no vegetation around the house. The entire scene is very sad. ********************************** Text on verso: "Picture 395. Hamberg aka Gravely Hills 1956 C 384" Text on scrapbook page: "Hamberg near Chaptico.
