Great room at Southampton, ChapticoEntry/Object ID
1995.001.1753Description
Black and white photo of the great room at Southampton in Chaptico. The camera is facing the central fireplace. The opening to the hearth is not quite square. There is a fire burning. There appears to be rough plaster around the opening framed by a shouldered architrave. Above it, the mantel appeared to be supported by three columns. There were two candlesticks and various china pieces on the mantel. Another shouldered architrave outlined the space above the mantel and a Greek key design outlined a rectangle within it. There was a deeply indented alcove on each side of the fireplace with a large six-over-six double-hung window in each. Foliage was visible outside the windows and there were various small pieces on each window sill. In the left alcove was a small table and two chairs. In the right alcove was a slightly larger table. The floor was wide wood planks. There were two rugs on the floor in front of the fireplace with a chair on each side of the hearth. There is lots of molding in various places on the walls. It may be plaster rather than wood. The room reminds one of Sotterley.
