2016.002.0116Description
8 3/4"h x 6 1/2"w black and white photocopy of an old photo. Below the image is written "Henrietta [Guy? Cox?] Hammett wife of David Hammett." The little girl is not identified. Mrs. Hammett was a large lady, or she may have been pregnant. She was seated on the photographer's chair with her right hand on her lap and her left arm around the girl. The girl was standing close to Mrs. Hammett and had her right arm up around the lady's shoulder. Mrs. Hammett had dark hair, barely visible under an odd round black hat that tied under her chin and had a long train behind. She had a round face and wore rimless glasses. She had on a voluminous button up the front jacket with a large collar and black lace trim. The dress under the jacket was not visible except for her knees. The skirt appeared to be quite full with a gathered panel from knee to ankle. It is possible that these were mourning clothes. The little girl had extremely curly light hair, perhaps red, and had on a lovely white dress. The dress had three quarter sleeves with a flared lace cuff, cutwork ruffled panels over each shoulder, a lace stand collar, a center panel with seven sets of carefully spaced four horizontal tucks, and a cutwork skirt. Her stockings and shoes were not visible. She had a large locket on a chain around her neck.
