Description

8"h x 6"w sepia tone portrait orientation photograph of Henry Greenfield Sothoron Key of Leonardtown. He was seated on a heavily carved dark armchair with a dark velvet seat with his body facing the camera and his head turned slightly to left. His left leg was crossed over his right. One hand was in his lap and one was on the curve of the chair arm. His hairline had receded some, but curled below his ears in the back. He was clean shaven and without glasses. His mouth was firmly set and turned down at the corners--not a man to trifle with. He had on a probably brown suit of heavy material with notched lapels and dark buttons on the coat. The coat was open. There seemed to be a narrow cuff on the coat sleeves and one dark button at the wrist. It is possible that his shirt had French cuffs. There were two holes in the foreground knee of his trousers. He wore a handsome double breasted velvet waistcoat with a wide shawl collar and four pairs of possibly brass buttons. His white shirt had a high collar wrapped in a silk? length tied in a square knot with short tails not even covering the collar of the vest. A piece of jewelry or a watch hung from his waist on his right. He had large hands and fingers. This photo was used in an exhibit about the Key family. ***********************Text below the photo in black flair ink: "Henry Greenfield Sothoron Key ca. 1850 The man who created this gracious home"
