Description

Holy Bible containing the old and new testaments translated out of the original tongues and with the former translations diligently compared and revised. Stereotype edition. New York, stereotyped by A. Chandler and printed by D. Fanshaw for the American Bible Society, 1834. 12"h x 9 1/2"w x 3"d It was identified by the donor as the Reeder family Bible. The cardboard covers are covered with dark brown leather with a black tooled border and a center tooled rectangle with a cartouche effect in the center. The front and back covers are the same, but there is much more wear on the back. The leather has failed on all edges of the covers, so the top and bottom corners of each cover are delaminating and swelling. There is medium green heavy paper on the inside of the front cover and was probably on the back cover too, but it is gone now. The outside spine is missing. The edges of the text block are evenly browned. The book is broken at p. 528-529. P. 794 is the final page of the old Testament and the last page in the book is p. 1040. I believe there were four more pages to get to the end of Revelations. There are two loose pages that show Reeder family marriages, births, and deaths for white family members and African American slaves. The Reeder pages list information about family members from 1808 to 1902. Family names include Reeder and Wallace. [Page 1, side 1] lists two marriages. [Page 1, side 2] lists births of white children. [Page 2, side 1] lists births of black children. [Page 2, side 2] lists deaths of whites in the left column and deaths of blacks in the right column. There were two additional loose sheets inside the front cover that do not belong to this Bible, but belonged to William Biscoe. There were entries from 1843-1925. Family names include Biscoe, Wallace, and Glascock. [Page 3, side 1] has "Wm. Biscoe" stamped in the upper left and a list of four marriages. [Page 3, side 2] lists births. [Page 4, side 1] lists births. [Page 4, side 2] lists deaths. These pages are separately packed in Tyvek and are on top of the box. ***Be sure to remove the Bible from its box with the Tyvek sling; do not try to pick it up by hand.***
