Description

10 5/8"h x 8"w x 1" d book with a black buckram cover and black leather spine and corners. A very small gold motif runs along the edges of the buckram and leather, both front and back. There is no text on the cover. The spine is marked off into nine sections, but the only text is at the very bottom of the spine: "GB 1.150 R." The pages are ruled and numbered in typical blue ink. There is a double red line running vertically one and one quarter inch from the spine or outer edge of a page. The club sometimes took summers off and sometimes the month of December. Often a Christmas party was held in the first week of December to free up the rest of the month. The women raised money, usually via card parties, to buy a pressure cooker for demonstrations and many other causes, including tuition for short courses at College Park. They also had an annual rummage sale. Over time, card parties proved more profitable than rummage sales. There were canning demonstrations, education about selecting quality goods, such as bedding, gardening afternoons, many kinds of food prepared, upholstery and chair caning demos, caring for the sick, anything to do with home economics. The club spent time on its rules and practice and were careful to follow parliamentary conventions. New club members were proposed and voted on by the current members. The club had several committees: Peace, Cultural, Fund Raising, Home Management, Clothing, Food & Nutrition, Rationing, 4H, Membership as examples. The committees changed depending on circumstances. Rationing was a frequent topic during the war years, especially sugar. The club sponsored a 4-H chapter. Penicillin was first mentioned in September 1943. On February 2, 1945, the group had to pause its meeting to put out a fire in the hostess' barn. Cover p. 2 Two printed thank you cards are taped in place; evidently the club had sent a condolence card or flowers to the families of Margaret E. Raley and Lillian Brandt.
