Homemakers Clubs were associated with the United States Department of Agriculture Home Extension Service, based at the University of Maryland, the state's land grant school. In Southern Maryland, there were separate clubs for white and African-American women in the beginning. Membership in all the clubs dwindled during the 20th century and many clubs had disbanded by 2000. The Home Extension Service had traveling classrooms to teach all sorts of homemaking skills. Sometimes these women were called demonstration agents.
There was a national, state, and county hierarchy for the extension organization. There are a few records of meetings on the state and national level. The locations were moved around the state and the country to give more people a chance to attend one of the meetings.
Several organizational names appear in these papers: Homemakers Clubs, Association for Family and Community Education, Extension Council for Home and Community, Maryland Extension Homemakers Council, St. Mary's Extension Council for Home and Community.
The local organizations were called Homemakers' Clubs until the mid-1970s, and then transitioned to being the St. Mary's Extension Council for Home and Community until the mid-1990s. At some point, the Extension Service dis-associated itself from the clubs. There was also an Association for Family and Community Education in the 1990s.Collection
