Black and white photograph entitled Hotel St. Mary's, Leonardtown, Md. published by the Illustrated Postcard Co., N.Y. The hotel is three stories tall, with six gable dormers in the metal gable roof, each with a two over two light window with a semi-circular arch on the top half. There is a widow's walk on the center of the roof with a railing around it. The third story has six two over two double hung windows with shutters, the second story has six two over two windows, taller than those above, and also with shutters. On the ground floor, it is difficult to see how many windows there may be because the wall is inset and somewhat below grade. About one third of the entire facade has a projecting porch and dormer that serves as the entrance. There are one dozen steps up a broad staircase to the entry door. Four brick pillars support the space on the ground level and four wood pillars support it on the second story. The entry door is flanked by one two over two windows on each side. There is a deep porch across the entire facade on this floor. It is supported by eight brick pillars. Behind those pillars and under the porch is a loggia for the ground floor, its floor being three or four steps below grade. Above the entry door on the porch roof is a railing that may create a small additional porch for the third story. This railing sets off the large gable dormer that has one two over two window in the center, flanked by a single one over one light window on either side. There is an eyebrow window with a "keystone" above. There is only one chair visible on the porch, there are no people around and there is trash on the lawn. One window is open in the roof and one on the third floor. There is an unattractive power pole to the left of the entry. The photographer was not careful in his tripod placement; the whole building slopes alarmingly to the right. Lucie sent this postcard to Mrs. A.P. Kilbourne in Stewartstown, Pa. Lucie says she went to the races (Leonardtown had a racetrack east of town) and to a musicale at night. The card was mailed from Valley Lee on October 18, but the year did not come through on the postmark. A green one cent Benjamin Franklin stamp was sufficient postage.Collection
