Description

Scan of an 8 5/8"w x 6 1/2"h landscape orientation sepia tone photo of a house and family in the late 1800s. It has been tentatively identified as the house at Penryn in the 7th District. This is a late fall or winter time photo because all the trees are bare. There is a barn with newish locust siding just visible in the background. Two large trees have snaked roots all around the left side of the photo. The house is a small, simple gable roofed clapboard building that may have white paint on the siding and door. There are no dormers. There is a lower addition on the right gable end. Each part has a failing cedar shake roof. On the left gable end there is a double hung window in the attic and a single double hung window on the first floor. On the long wall there is a wide entry door that has no fenestration. About midway between the door and the right corner is a single four light, probably double hung window. There are two plank doors in the long side of the addition. There are no steps up to the house door and very crude steps to the doors in the addition. There is a large square chimney on the gable end between the house and the addition. Several siding boards are missing on all visible elevations. The family is standing in the yard in front of the house--father, mother, two sons, and maybe the hired man on the right. He is standing apart from the others. Everyone is dressed in their best clothes. The boys have knickers and dark coats and look just like their mother. The woman has on a black dress with a high collar and very slightly puffed sleeves at the shoulder. The father has on a black coat, white shirt, a vest and a tie. The man on the right has on a collarless white shirt, a vest, and a dark coat. His trousers are frayed at the knees. he is holding some sort of bag in his left hand. Between the left gable end and the house is a platform swing. **************************************************** No text on verso
