Inauguration ballEntry/Object ID
1995.001.1618Description
This pale buff card with gray and black engraving may be a ticket to an inauguration ball for President Cleveland and Vice-President Hendrichs on March 4, 1885. The card appears to be hand-signed by each gentleman. However, the time and location of the event are not on the card, so it may only be a souvenir. Portraits of each gentleman are pictured in elaborate oval frames with olive branches and flags drawing the eye to misty outlines of the Capitol, White House, Washington Monument, etc. Shapely women in Roman dress, holding symbols of knowledge and industry, crown the scene. Text: "Inauguration Ball March 4, 1885 commemorative of the inauguration of Grover Cleveland, J. A. Hendrichs, President [and] Vice-President of the United States." Members of the committees for the event are listed on each side of the portrait. Some possible county names are John E. Norris, William H. Clagett, Dorsey Clagett, John M. Sims, Samuel E. Wheatley, and James L. Norris. There is nothing on the verso of the piece, but there was a note with it: "Property of Mrs. Robert Cole 1364 Quincy St. [Washington, D.C.]"Collection
