The pages had a printed “Savings Department” in black on the top right of each page. In the upper right corner was a line for an “Account No.” and below that was a line for the “Sheet No.” Very occasionally a “1” would be entered on the line, but the pages were not numbered. Near the left edge was a long line for “Name,” and for “Address.” The address was a post office name. If the person lived in Leonardtown, their address was often “Local.” There were small boxes at the head of each of five columns with printed titles. The five columns appeared twice on each page. Sometimes there were notes at the top of a page about an estate or other details of the account.
Column 1: Blank
Column 2: Date
Column 3: Withdrawals
Column 4: Interest
Column 5: Deposits
Column 6: Balance
Column 7-1: Repeat of columns 2-6
On September 18, 1922, each account was totaled, a red line drawn, and then the amount was the basis for a new set of figures from that point. I have no idea why this was done.
The Knights of St. Jerome and Mr. Statesman had accounts, so African-Americans did use the bank.
There are twenty-five sheets in alphabetical order by the depositor’s name.
