Invitation to unveiling of the Leonard Calvert MonumentEntry/Object ID
2004.008.0337Description
This is a piece of light brown cardboard that was likely cream in the beginning that served as the invitation to the unveiling of the Leonard Calvert Monument. At the top, it had 1634 on the left and 1891 on the right. The Maryland seal was in the center. Text in dark blue ink: "The Leonard Calvert Monument Committee request the honor of your presence at St. Mary's City, St. Mary's County, Md., at 1 P.M., Wednesday, June 3rd, 1891, at the unveiling of the Monument erected by the State of Maryland to the memory of Leonard Calvert, the First Governor of Maryland." There was an official steamer that left Baltimore the day before, arriving at St. Mary's City in time for breakfast on the 3rd. It left at 6 pm after the ceremony and arrived in Baltimore the morning of June 4. J. Thomas Scharf, Edward W. LeCompte, and Washington Wilkinson were the Committee. Attached to the cardboard at the top was a dull rose ribbon that was wrapped around what purported to be a piece of the mulberry tree from the graveyard at Trinity Church. Attached to that, with a tightly wound length of rose string, was a bundle of white string wrapped in a small motheaten piece of red wool. I have no idea if these pieces were on the invitation when it arrived.
