Description

One patch work quilt in the Single Irish Chain pattern with a largely golden beige background. 1 5/8" red, purple, red and black, red and black plaid, red and beige dots, green and red plaid, and beige squares alternate with 5 3/4" plain beige squares on three quarters of the quilt; about one foot of an edge has completely faded. The back of the quilt is a golden beige background with a double red stripe with a small Greek key between the stripes. The stripes are about 3/4" apart. Between the stripes are small red posies. Fabric failure on the back was often, but not exclusively, along the edge of a red stripe. The archivist thinks the fabrics are of 1880s vintage, but we do not know when the quilt was actually made. It has cotton batting. It is roughly 64" x 69" x 62" x 72". All the edges of the quilt are compromised, but the right and left edges are very ragged. The quilt is in pitiful condition, so much so that it cannot be cleaned. It was stored in a southern Maryland attic, so it is a wonder it is here at all. The Society does not presently have a quilt of this type, so I opted to retain it. Arbitrary identification of edges: Top=red and beige polka dots, Left=2 red and black squares, Right=red vine squares in rags, Bottom=completely faded The small squares are nine to a block. Each corner is a colored square, as is the center square and the others are beige, so there are five colored squares and 4 beige squares in a block. Beginning at the top, from right to left, row 1. 7 blocks of color 6 blocks plain 2. 5 1/2 blocks color 7 blocks plain 3. 7 blocks color 6 1/4 blocks plain 4. 6 blocks color + 7 blocks plain 5. 7 blocks color 6 1/2 blocks plain 6. 6 blocks color + 7 blocks plain 7. 7 blocks color 6 blocks plain + 8. 4 1/2 blocks color 9 blocks plain 9. 7 blocks color 6 1/2 blocks plain 10. 2 partial color 13 blocks plain 11. 4 blocks color 9 blocks plain 12. 1 red square 13 1/2 blocks plain 13. none 13 + 2 half blocks plain 14. 1 red square 13 + 2 half blocks plain The fabric has failed in many areas of the quilt in ways that I think cannot be repaired. There are other areas that may be repaired.
