James J. Stone was a farmer and justice of the peace in Oakley in the Seventh District. His judge duties included selling dog and other licenses so people did not have to go all the way to Leonardtown to get them and assessing fines for oystering and fishing violations. Many watermen were caught with undersized oysters. Stone periodically sent his wife to Leonardtown with considerable sums of money to turn in to the circuit court or the county treasurer.
There are receipts for fire insurance premiums, county taxes, and general financial dealings.
There is an 1894 deed for Cobrum that appears to be the result of a difficult estate settlement. There is a draft and a final 1915 deed for Tomakokin in the Seventh District. In 1925, Philip Dorsey borrowed $2000 from Nannie Stone by mortgaging a piece of property he inherited in the Seventh District.
There are four letters, one of which is Dorsey Stone's first letter to his mother after he went away to Washington College in Chestertown, Md.Collection
