James J. Stone was a farmer and justice of the peace in Oakley in the Seventh District. His judicial duties included selling dog and other licenses so people did not have to go all the way to Leonardtown to get them and assessing fines for oystering and fishing violations. Many watermen were caught with undersized oysters. Stone periodically sent his wife to Leonardtown with considerable sums of money to turn in to the circuit court or the county treasurer. He also remitted money, often several hundred dollars, to the Conservation Commission of Maryland.Collection
