Scope and Content

Bayly Janson-La Palme worked with Lois Green Carr on economic data about colonial Maryland. Ms. Janson-La Palme then did her own work on economic data about Saint Mary's County from 1790-1870. She relied on census data, assessment records, estate inventories, etc. Her dissertation was based on this material, although the analysis in the dissertation only went up through 1840. The voluminous handwritten data was later transcribed onto 5 1/4" floppy disks using PC WRITE. That data was run on the mainframe computer at the University of Maryland. The disks, spread sheets, and other printouts are at the Hall of Records of the Maryland Archives. 8 boxes of 4" x 6" cards "with information on all the individuals studied. These cards include census data, information on property owned ..., and probate information. ... These cards are arranged by Hundred and later by Census District. ..." The final box also contains cards on St. Mary's County mariners 2" binder with an index to all individuals studied 2" binder with data from various sources relevant to the dissertation 1" binder with lists of mariners, ship owners, and ships 2" binder of the 1870 census of St. Mary's County 3 boxes of 5" x 8" cards with information from other sources 1 small box of cards listing the bibliography of the dissertation and list of skilled African-Americans Spread sheets: Analysis of inventories 1790-1864 Inventories with fishing equipment 1790-1865 Planters with overseers 1790-1860 Skilled slaves and free African-Americans 1790-1864 Valuations, Guardianships & Indentures 1790-1864 1850 Agricultural census transcribed and copies of the microfilm 2 tubes of maps of St. Mary's County Originals of maps locating mills in Saint Mary's County 18 folders of data about crops, land, and slaves charted in several ways with graphic representations of the data also included Off prints of Ms. Janson-La Palme's articles
