Bayly Janson-La Palme worked with Lois Green Carr on economic data about colonial Maryland. Ms. Janson-La Palme then did her own work on economic data about Saint Mary's County from 1790-1870. She relied on census data, assessment records, estate inventories, etc. Her dissertation was based on this material, although the analysis in the dissertation only went up through 1840. The voluminous handwritten data was later transcribed onto 5 1/4" floppy disks using PC WRITE. That data was run on the mainframe computer at the University of Maryland. The disks, spread sheets, and other printouts are at the Hall of Records of the Maryland Archives.
This is a copy of a map held in the Maryland Hall of Records of land tracts in St. Mary's County. It appears to be part of a series done in May 1854 when the county commissioners were trying to settle competing land claims. Most of the tracts are titled and numbered.
Hickory Hills is at the very bottom of the sheet. Peace and Quiet and Flower of the Forrest are nearby. Near the top edge are Ivy Hills, Sandy Ground, and Hard Bargain Farm. Woodpecker is on the right edge of the tracts. Many of the lot lines have numbers of perches? feet? between posts. The sheet has been folded several times and there is an area of loss in the lower left quadrant.
