Bayly Janson-La Palme worked with Lois Green Carr on economic data about colonial Maryland. Ms. Janson-La Palme then did her own work on economic data about Saint Mary's County from 1790-1870. She relied on census data, assessment records, estate inventories, etc. Her dissertation was based on this material, although the analysis in the dissertation only went up through 1840. The voluminous handwritten data was later transcribed onto 5 1/4" floppy disks using PC WRITE. That data was run on the mainframe computer at the University of Maryland. The disks, spread sheets, and other printouts are at the Hall of Records of the Maryland Archives.
This is a copy of four sheets of a map of St. Mary's County from Point Lookout to Cedar Point on the Bay and around the corner in the Patuxent River to Town Creek. There is a small amount of map on the Potomac side from St. George's Island to Piney Point. If there were a large enough table, these sheets could fit together. The topography is rendered in an artistic fashion; this was before the days of USGS quadrangles. The area was surveyed under the direction of James Kearney and the sheet with the title was signed by him. There is a handwritten group of tide and weather data for September and October of 1823. The names of several property holders are in place on the land and at least one schoolhouse is identified.
Text of stamp on verso: "NARA Record Group 77 Civil Works Map Files F27 75%" If this is a 75% copy, one would be able to paper walls with the full size sheets.Collection
