Scope and Content

35 sheets ; 14" x 25 1/2" in a 16 1/8" x 27" folder Bayly Janson-La Palme worked with Lois Green Carr on economic data about colonial Maryland. Ms. Janson-La Palme then did her own work on economic data about Saint Mary's County from 1790-1870. She relied on census data, assessment records, estate inventories, etc. Her dissertation was based on this material, although the analysis in the dissertation only went up through 1840. The voluminous handwritten data was later transcribed onto 5 1/4" floppy disks using PC WRITE. That data was run on the mainframe computer at the University of Maryland. The disks, spread sheets, and other printouts are at the Hall of Records of the Maryland Archives. This group of sheets was labeled on a cover sheet as "St. Mary's Inventories." Numbered columns from left to right: Year [of inventory], Month, [Name of Decedent], [Monetary value of the estate], Livestock (further subdivided into 16 categories), Poultry (further subdivided into 5 categories), Slaves (further subdivided into 6 categories), Transport (further subdivided into 7 categories), Plantation (further subdivided into 6 categories), Tools (further subdivided into 7 categories), Weaving (further subdivided into 6 categories), Crops (further subdivided into 22 categories), Personal [Effects] (further subdivided into 14 categories), House [Effects] (further subdivided into 4 categories), Profession, Per Cent of Inventory (further subdivided into 8 categories), The numbered rows contained all the data entered into the columns for each decedent. Inventories for 1795-1800 contained information on 167 decedents. The entries for 1800-1810 were on 11" x 20" sheets and had all the same columns and rows, but the writing was even smaller. 1800-1803 covered 117 decedents. 1803-1807 covered 91 decedents. 1807-1810 covered 102 decedents. The 1810-1814 group went back to the larger ledger sheets. 87 decedents were covered. An 1814-1818 group covered 138 decedents. An 1817-1824 group covered 174 decedents. An 1824-1826 group covered 60 decedents. An 1826-1829 group covered 61 decedents. An 1830-1832 group covered 96 decedents.
