John Dean wrote Ira Fowler seven letters during World War II. Both men were from the Hollywood, Maryland area and both were serving in the infantry. Dean was in training in Mississippi. Fowler was home in Hollywood waiting to be called up. Their girlfriends were sisters. Both were deeply religious men, members of the Church of the Nazarene.
July 8, 1943 The return address on the blue envelope indicated Dean was a corporal at Camp Shelby in Mississippi. He did not have to pay postage for mailing. The letter was on blue paper with a 69th Infantry Division logo in the upper left corner. The text was typed. He said he had almost no free time and was responsible for his barracks on the weekends. He told Fowler the camp, the weather, the work, and the women were not good. He had a girlfriend at home whom he much preferred. Dean encouraged his friend to remain a Christian, even though that was very difficult to do in the Army.Collection
