John Dean wrote Ira Fowler seven letters during World War II. Both men were from the Hollywood, Maryland area and both were serving in the infantry. Dean was in training in Mississippi. Fowler was in training at Camp Grant, Illinois. Their girlfriends were sisters. Both were deeply religious men, members of the Church of the Nazarene.
August 29, 1943 The return address on the blue envelope indicated Dean was a sergeant at Camp Shelby in Mississippi. He did not have to pay postage for mailing. The letter was on two sheets of folded blue paper with the logo of the 69th Infantry Division in the upper left corner. The bottom third of the second sheet is missing. The text was handwritten. Dean was back in the hospital for surgery on ingrown toenails. He expected to have a furlough in late September. He also described a Church of the Nazarene young people's rally and the friendliness of the congregation at a church near his base. He also referenced a revival in Hollywood. Dean encouraged Fowler to keep Christ in his life.Collection
