John Dean wrote Ira Fowler seven letters during World War II. Both men were from the Hollywood, Maryland area and both were serving in the infantry. Dean was in training in Mississippi. Fowler was in training at Camp Grant, Illinois. Their girlfriends were sisters. Both were deeply religious men, members of the Church of the Nazarene.
September 12, 1943 The return address on the cream envelope indicated Dean was a sergeant at Camp Shelby in Mississippi. He did not have to pay postage for mailing. The letter was on four sheets of folded cream paper with a blue "E pluribus unum" logo of Camp Shelby, Mississippi in the center top of each sheet. The text was handwritten. Dean congratulated Fowler on his religious salvation. Dean's foot surgery had been done, and he was looking forward to his furlough at the end of September. His basic training was over, but his future was not clear. He received a letter a day from his girlfriend, Ruth Thompson. He spent two pages encouraging his friend to trust in the Lord.Collection
