John F. Dent's pocket account book for 1869, 1875-1877. A few of the entries are in ink, but most are in lead pencil. One pencil used was thicker than the others, made thick lines, and tended to smear onto other pages. This is a dark red leatherette book, black on the inside, with the back cover large enough to wrap around to the front, where it is secured under a strap. The edges of the flap are slightly curved and the strap end echoes the curves. There is an accordion pocket at the back of this book and a loop for a writing implement. The edges of the pages are gilded. All the pages are ruled for a ledger, except for two blank sheets in the front and back Mr. Dent entered information about tenants, hired hands, his management of local county roads, products of his farms, etc. Several entries are crossed out, indicating they were settled. Mr. Dent made an index by personal names at the beginning of this notebook. The pages are numbered up to 155, followed by sixteen blank pages. There were three more pages of accounts, two blank sheets, and three more pages of accounts. A tab of paper indicates that this was the 16th diary filmed.Collection
