John F. Dent's pocket diary for 1863-1864Entry/Object ID
2004.008.0237Description
John F. Dent's pocket diary for 1863-1864. This diary is divided between calendar entries and a cash book section in the back. At the beginning, he mixed these functions, but then settled down to daily entries about the weather and other events. There is considerable information about the behavior of the Union troops in the neighborhood. The entries are in ink and pencil; some of the writing is incredibly tiny. This is a black leather book with the back cover large enough to wrap around to the front, where it is secured under a strap. The edges of the flap are curved. There is an accordion pocket at the back of this book. The title page identifies this as a daily memorandum book for 1861, so Mr. Dent crossed out inaccurate day names as needed. A tab of paper indicates that this was the 3rd diary filmed.Collection
