Description

John F. Dent's pocket diary for 1865-1867. This diary is mostly an account book, especially for labor. The entries are in ink and pencil; some of the writing is incredibly tiny. P. 99 is a weather diary for the first week of January 1867. On the inside front cover is a list of Mr. Dent's slaves who went into the army. Several of them died. This is a black leather book with the back cover large enough to wrap around to the front, where it is secured under a strap. The edges of the flap are curved. There is an accordion pocket at the back of this book. The light colored paper is ruled to be an account book. Much of this book is very difficult to read. A tab of paper indicates that this was the 4th diary filmed. There are 3"x5" cards with Mr. Beitzell's handwriting inserted at P. 54/55.
