John F. Dent's pocket diary for 1867Entry/Object ID
2004.008.0239Description
John F. Dent's pocket diary for 1867. This diary is a combination of account book and daily notes. The entries are in ink and pencil; some of the writing is incredibly tiny. During this year, Mr. Dent took a trip to Davenport, Iowa to see about selling some property there. This is a black leather book with the back cover large enough to wrap around to the front, where it is secured under a strap. The edges of the flap are curved and "Diary 1867" in a flowing ribbon device is stamped near the tab portion. There is an accordion pocket at the back of this book and a loop for a writing implement. Most of the light colored pages are for specific days and there are memoranda and cash account sheets in the back. There is a one page index to some of the diary section--the pages are numbered up to p. 101, but then the numbering was abandoned. Mr. Dent entered what he needed wherever he wanted to put it. A tab of paper indicates that this was the 5th diary filmed.Collection
