John F. Dent's pocket diary for 1872. This diary is a combination of account book and daily notes. The entries are in pencil; some of the writing is incredibly tiny. The Dents had a terrible summer. Their oldest daughter, Kate, married to Joseph Dent in Georgia, became very ill and was advised to come home. She and her husband and daughter arrived in Washington, D.C. on June 1, but had to rest until June 8. She was ill for the entire month of June, delivered a daughter on July 7, and died on July 15. The new baby died on July 26. John F. Dent's son Robert, called Beauregard, became ill and died on July 20. Everyone in the household was very ill, but no one else died. This is a brown leather book, orange-brown on the inside, with the back cover large enough to wrap around to the front, where it is secured under a strap. The edges of the flap are curved. There is an accordion pocket at the back of this book and a loop for a writing implement. The edges of the pages are gilded. Most of the light colored pages are for specific days and there are memoranda and cash account sheets in the back. The pages are numbered up to p. 258, but then the numbering was abandoned. Mr. Dent entered what he needed wherever he wanted to put it. A tab of paper indicates that this was the 10th diary filmed.Collection
