John F. Dent's pocket diary for 1876Entry/Object ID
2004.008.0248Description
John F. Dent's pocket diary for 1876. This diary is a combination of account book and daily notes. Most of the entries are in lead pencil, although one is in ink, which is much easier to read. This is a dark red leather book, red on the inside, with the back cover large enough to wrap around to the front, where it is secured under a strap. The edges of the flap are curved. There is a leather accordion pocket at both the front and back of this book, an interior leather cover for the text block, and a loop for a writing implement. The edges of the pages are gilded. Most of the light colored pages are for specific days and there are memoranda and cash account sheets in the back. The pages are numbered up to p. 31, but then the numbering was abandoned. Mr. Dent entered what he needed wherever he wanted to put it. There were several pages toward the back labeled "Centennial Pages" where in Mr. Dent wrote about a celebration at Point Lookout and at the Confederate Cemetery. A tab of paper indicates that this was the 14th diary filmed.Collection
