John F. Dent's pocket diary for 1878, with a title page that says "Excelsior diary 1878." This diary is a combination of account book and daily notes. The entries are in lead pencil, some of which are badly smeared. This is an black leather book, brown on the inside, with the back cover large enough to wrap around to the front where it is secured under a strap. The edges of the flap are slightly curved and the strap echoes that pattern. There is a double leather accordion pocket at both the front and back of this book, an interior leather cover for the text block, and a loop for a writing implement. The edges of the pages are gilded. Most of the light colored pages are for specific days and there are memoranda and cash account sheets in the back. A tab of paper indicates that this was the 17th diary filmed.Collection
