Description

John F. Dent's pocket diary for 1879, with a title page that says "Excelsior diary 1879." This diary is a combination of account book and daily notes. The entries are in lead pencil, some of which are badly smeared. This is a black leather book, brown on the inside, with the back cover large enough to wrap around to the front where it is secured under a strap. The edges of the flap are slightly curved and the strap echoes that pattern. There is a double leather accordion pocket at both the front and back of this book, an interior leather cover for the text block, and a loop for a writing implement. The edges of the pages are gilded. Most of the light colored pages are for specific days and there are memoranda and cash account sheets in the back. A tab of paper indicates that this was the 18th diary filmed.
