John F. Dent's pocket diary for 1883Entry/Object ID
2004.008.0256Description
John F. Dent's pocket diary for 1883, with a title page that says "Excelsior diary for 1883." It was presented to Mr. Dent by Dr. St. Clair. This diary is a combination of account book and daily notes. The entries are in lead pencil. This is a dark red leather book, gray on the inside, with the back cover large enough to wrap around to the front where its tab is secured under a strap on the front cover. The edges of the flap are curved and the end of the strap echoes this design. There is an accordion double pocket at the front and back of this book; in the back pocket the divider has a lovely scalloped edge. There is a loop for a writing implement. There is a leather cover over the text block. The edges of the pages are gilded. Most of the light colored pages are for specific days and there are memoranda and cash account sheets in the back. On September 28 is a sad entry about the death of the granddaughter in Georgia. A tab of paper indicates that this was the 22nd diary filmed.Collection
