John F. Dent's pocket diary for 1885Entry/Object ID
2004.008.0258Description
John F. Dent's pocket diary for 1885, with a title page that says "Excelsior Diary 1885." It was presented to Mr. Dent by Dr. St. Clair. This diary is a combination of account book and daily notes. The entries are in lead pencil. This is a black leather book, golden brown on the inside, with the back cover large enough to wrap around to the front and a tab that slides under a strap. The corners of the flap are curved and the curve is echoed on the tab. There is an accordion pocket at the back of this book and a loop for a writing implement. The edges of the pages are gilded. Most of the light colored pages are for specific days and there are memoranda and cash account sheets in the back. Fannie was married April 25, much to Mr. Dent's displeasure. Beginning December 4, Mr. Dent devotes several pages to what he calls his "night musings," an uncharacteristic personal expression of his loneliness and depression. A tab of paper indicates that this was the 24th diary filmed.Collection
