Description

John F. Dent's pocket diary for 1887, with a title page that says "Excelsior Diary for 1887." It was presented to Mr. Dent by Dr. St. Clair, his brother-in-law. This diary is a combination of an account book and daily notes. The entries are in lead pencil. This is a black leather book, black on the inside, with the back cover large enough to wrap around to the front so the tab slides under a strap. The corners of the flap are curved and the curve is echoed on the tab. Stamped on the long axis of the the flap is "Excelsior Diary." There is an accordion pocket at the back of this book and a loop for a writing implement. The edges of the pages are red marbled. Most of the light colored pages are for specific days and there are memoranda and cash account sheets in the back. The contents of the page for January 1 are almost completely obliterated by contact with the facing page. A tab of paper indicates that this was the 26th diary filmed.
